Description:

  • Difficult to determine whether this is an eprints encoding problem or a problem in certain email systems on the receiving end…

Sometimes the email software inserts some extra characters into the
registration confirmation link by replacing the = with =3D and adding =20 at the end. You can, as an preliminary solution, remove the excess characters from the URL again. For example, compare the two URLs below - the bottom one is the correct one:

http://orgprints.org/perl/confirm?userid=3D3124&pin=3DBAACDEEBD9664D4B=20
http://orgprints.org/perl/confirm?userid=3124&pin=BAACDEEBD9664D4B

Probably something to do with the encoding of the mail. We have had problems before with the character encoding of mails that are sent out by orgprints.org. I thought it had been solved, but apparently not. If you know of similar encoding problems, please let me know and I will look at it when I get time. I might try to change the encoding again, but this may give other problems.

Some mails on this

Dear Hugo,

Thanks ever so much for your very prompt assistance.

Just to satisfy your curiosity about my email software . . . extra
characters were not added to the link you sent from your email account.

Kind regards to you as well,
Kerri

Hi Kerri
Seems like your email software inserted some extra characters into the
link (‘=‘ became ‘=3D’). I took them out again to get the original
confirmation link:
http://orgprints.org/perl/confirm?userid=3124&pin=BAACDEEBD9664D4B
Then I pressed it on your behalf and got the attached confirmation
screen.

So now you are registered and should be able to log in to your user
area.

(I would be courious as to whether your email software did the same with
this mail, or if it was only the mail from Organic Eprints - the part
after ‘userid’ in the above link should be an equal sign and four
ciffers followed by an ‘&’ …)

Let me know if you have any further problems.
Kind regards
Hugo

Dear Organic Eprints,

When I clicked on the link you sent
(http://orgprints.org/perl/confirm?userid=3D3124&pin=3DBAACDEEBD9664D4B=
20) the following information was displayed on my browser:

“Error: Registration or registration change failed
User not found. It is possible that indicates a database problem, but
please check the parameters in the URL carefully.”

I was therefore unable to activate my new password. Please advise what
I can do differently.

Sincerely,
Kerri

Dear User,

Thank you for your interest in Organic Eprints.

You need to activate your new password by clicking the following link
(if the URL is not shown as a link, please copy it to your internet
browser address box). The link is only valid for about three weeks.
http://orgprints.org/perl/confirm?userid=3D3124&pin=3DBAACDEEBD9664D4B=2

You have to use your username and password in order to enter your user
ar= ea (your username is: ). You can also use them to access files
that are restricted to registered users only. =20 Once you have
confirmed your identity you can deposit eprints and subscri= be to email
alerts. =20 This message was generated automatically by software. If you

Dear Florian and Ute
Yes, you are right, the mail system of BLE seems to have messed up the URL by replacing the = with =3D and adding =20 at the end. Probably something to do with the encoding of the mail. We have had problems before with the character encoding of mails that are sent out by orgprints.org. I thought it had been solved, but apparently not. If you know of similar encoding problems, please let me know and I will look at it when I get time. If you meet more with this problem you can, as an emergency solution, remove the excess characters from the URL. I might try to change the encoding again, if there is a need, but different mail systems react differently to different encodings so correcting it in one place may destroy it in others, and there may not be a perfect solution.

The proper confirmation URL is:
http://orgprints.org/perl/confirm?userid=2622&pin=9417FAFF1781324D
I pressed it and got an ok, so Ute should be able to log in know (probably with the last password).

Let me know if you do still not succeed.

Kind regards
Hugo

Dear Hugo,

this is the reply we got after changing her password. Some characters semem to be muddled up (that’s due to something in the BLE network). Could the URL be faulty, too?
