Abstract
Collaboration with the fair trade movement, and own research into the potentials of fair trade to foster poverty alleviation and development, lie behind the Belgiangovernment’s engagement with fair trade.Belgium has mainstreamed its engagement by including the Fair Trade Centre as a unit in the Belgian Technical Cooperation. The FTC had been established as one initiative amongst several within an “International House”, sponsored by the Secretary of State in 1999.The “International House” provided a concrete indication of the Belgian government’s belief in the potential of fair trade as an effective tool to deliver on its public policy objectives for development and cooperation. It was also testament to the already strong collaboration that existed between the nongovernmental fair trade movement and public authorities.
Keywords: Fair trade, cooperation, governmental engagement
Relevance to our study:
Even tough the paper is focused on fair trade market in Belgium, the governmental support to FT certificated products and to the NGO’s involved in FT projects, seems an interesting model in order to promote organic products and organic producers association in developing countries as well
Relevancy on a scale from 1 to 5 = 2
